Designing for the Days When the Weather Doesn't Cooperate
The true test of an outdoor space isn't how it performs on a perfect sunny afternoon. It's how often it remains usable when conditions are less than ideal. That challenge shaped this project in Truganina, where the homeowners wanted an outdoor area that could stay functional through changing weather without sacrificing comfort or appearance.
The solution centred around creating a protected outdoor zone large enough to support multiple activities at once. At 10x4 metres, the new patio provides substantial coverage while maintaining a clean architectural profile that complements the existing home.
A Structure Built Around Strength and Comfort
The foundation of the project is a custom flat-roof Cooldek® patio supported by a combination of 150x150mm and 90x90mm aluminium posts. The structural framework is reinforced with a Probeam 140x50mm system and 50x50 rise brackets, allowing the roof span to remain rigid while preserving a streamlined visual appearance. Above, 50mm insulated Cooldek® panels from Bondor were selected to improve thermal performance and reduce heat transfer beneath the roof. Unlike conventional metal roofing, the insulated panels help create a more stable environment underneath, making the area noticeably more comfortable during warmer periods.

A 200mm edge gutter system was integrated into the design to manage water efficiently during heavy rainfall. Rather than treating drainage as an afterthought, the guttering was incorporated into the structure to maintain both performance and visual consistency.
Weather protection extends beyond the roofline. To improve flexibility, a manual PVC blind system was installed along the patio. This addition allows the homeowners to quickly adjust the level of protection based on changing conditions, helping reduce wind and rain exposure when needed while preserving openness during milder weather.

Comfort after sunset was another key consideration. Eight integrated downlights provide consistent illumination across the entire patio area, eliminating dark zones and making the space practical for evening gatherings. To support airflow across the full width of the structure, two smart ceiling fans were incorporated into the design. Their placement ensures air circulation remains effective without interrupting the clean lines of the ceiling.
The Result
This Truganina project demonstrates that effective outdoor design is often about removing limitations. By combining insulated roofing, integrated drainage, adjustable weather protection, and carefully planned lighting and ventilation, the patio functions as a genuine extension of the home rather than a space reserved for perfect weather. The homeowners now have an outdoor area that remains comfortable, practical, and low maintenance throughout the year, creating a versatile setting for entertaining, relaxing, and everyday living.
