Cooldek Patio Comfort In Springvale South

Feature Image

Challenge

In February 2026, Sam Outdoor Living was approached by a homeowner in Springvale South, VIC 3172 to upgrade an underutilised outdoor area into a space suitable for daily use and entertaining. The client wanted a covered structure that could handle heat, rain, and changing conditions while keeping a clean and modern appearance that matched the home.

The available footprint measured 5.5 metres by 3.9 metres, which required careful structural planning to maintain strength without making the space feel enclosed. The client also raised concerns about heat build-up under standard metal roofing and wanted a solution that could improve thermal comfort during warmer months. At the same time, the structure needed to manage rainfall efficiently, especially during heavy downpours common in Melbourne’s climate. Lighting was another requirement. The space needed to remain functional after sunset without relying on temporary fixtures. All elements had to work together as a permanent outdoor extension of the home rather than a simple cover.

Solution

Sam Outdoor Living designed and constructed a custom flat roof patio using a 50 millimetre Cooldek insulated panel system from Bondor, combined with structural components from Stratco. The Cooldek panels feature a polystyrene core bonded between two steel skins, which reduces heat transfer and helps maintain a more stable temperature underneath the roof. The structure was supported by 150 x 150 millimetre aluminium posts, selected for their load-bearing capacity and resistance to corrosion. These posts anchor the system securely while keeping a clean and minimal profile. A 140 x 50 millimetre Probeam was installed to carry the primary load across the span, allowing the roof to remain rigid under both dead load and environmental stress.

To address water management, a 200 millimetre edge gutter system was integrated along the roofline. This larger capacity gutter improves flow rate during heavy rainfall and directs water efficiently to the drainage point, reducing overflow risk and protecting the surrounding area. Lighting was built directly into the structure through four evenly spaced downlights. Their placement was planned to provide consistent coverage across the entire 5.5 x 3.9 metre area without creating dark zones or glare. This setup allows the space to remain usable at night without additional lighting installations.

Results

The completed patio now serves as a reliable outdoor living area that the client can use throughout the year. The insulated Cooldek roofing reduces heat build-up during hot days, making the space noticeably more comfortable compared to standard single-skin metal roofing. During rain, the edge gutter system handles water flow effectively, keeping the area below dry and usable.

The structural framework provides a solid overhead cover with minimal movement, giving the space a sense of permanence and safety. The integrated downlights extend usability into the evening, turning the patio into a practical setting for dinners, gatherings, and everyday use.
