Compact Cooldek® Patio Build For Year-round Outdoor Living

Challenge

In February 2026, Sam Outdoor Living was engaged to upgrade an outdoor area into a functional space suitable for year-round use. The client required a compact solution that could deliver consistent weather protection, thermal comfort, and a clean, modern finish. The design needed to maximise usability within a limited footprint while ensuring long-term durability and minimal maintenance.

Solution

Sam Outdoor Living designed and installed a 4.8 by 4.3 metre flat-roof insulated patio using a Cooldek® system. The roof structure incorporated 50mm insulated panels, selected to reduce heat transfer and improve thermal performance across seasons. Structural support was achieved using 150x150mm aluminium posts combined with 140x50mm Probeam members, providing load-bearing strength while maintaining a streamlined profile.

To improve natural light penetration without compromising weather protection, the roof integrated Ez-glaze polycarbonate sections. These panels allow controlled daylight entry while maintaining resistance to rain and UV exposure. A 200mm edge gutter system was installed along the roofline and connected to stormwater drainage to ensure effective runoff management during heavy rainfall.

Internal functionality was enhanced with the installation of four recessed downlights and a smart ceiling fan. This combination allows for adjustable lighting conditions and improved airflow, ensuring the space remains usable during both daytime and evening, as well as across varying weather conditions.

Results

The completed patio delivers a stable, insulated outdoor structure that extends the usable living space of the home. The combination of insulated roofing, integrated lighting, and controlled ventilation creates a comfortable environment throughout the year. The use of materials from Bondor, Stratco, and Palram ensures resistance to weather exposure while reducing ongoing maintenance requirements. The final outcome is a compact but highly functional outdoor area designed for daily use, entertaining, and long-term performance.
