Long-span Cooldek® Patio And Decking Build For Outdoor Living

Feature Image

Challenge

By April 2026, the outdoor area had one main issue. It looked usable, but it rarely was. The space ran long and narrow, which made it difficult to cover properly without creating hot spots, dark sections, or poor airflow. The client needed something that would make the entire length feel consistent and comfortable, not just part of it. At the same time, the structure had to hold up through seasonal changes and stay easy to maintain over time.

Solution

The project was designed as a continuous 13 by 3 metre system, combining an insulated Cooldek® patio with matching composite decking to create a unified outdoor zone. The roof structure used 50mm insulated panels to reduce heat transfer and improve acoustic performance during rainfall. A 140x50mm Probeam was installed to support the span, working alongside 150x150mm aluminium posts to ensure load-bearing stability while maintaining a clean architectural profile.

To avoid a closed-in feel, sections of Ez-glaze were introduced along the roofline. These bring in natural light without exposing the space to weather. A 200mm edge gutter was integrated to control water flow and connect cleanly into the stormwater system.

The internal setup focused on usability. Ten evenly spaced downlights were installed to maintain consistent illumination across the entire length of the patio, while a smart ceiling fan and a heater strip were added to regulate airflow and temperature. This combination allows the space to remain functional during both warmer and cooler conditions. The decking below was constructed to match the footprint of the patio, creating a level, low-maintenance surface that supports everyday use without ongoing upkeep.

Results

The finished space no longer feels like a leftover outdoor strip. It works as a proper extension of the home. Temperature stays more consistent under the insulated roof, lighting remains even from one end to the other, and airflow keeps the area comfortable throughout the day.

Because the materials were selected for durability, the client does not have to worry about ongoing upkeep. The result is a space that gets used regularly, supports different activities, and adds practical value to the home rather than just visual appeal.
