Challenges
In November 2025, a homeowner in Officer South wanted a structure that combined durability, ease of maintenance, and a strong aesthetic presence without compromising the open feel of the space. One key challenge was achieving an effective balance between insulation, structural rigidity, and design coherence with the existing house. Another important factor was lighting. The client requested an area that would feel comfortable and welcoming at night, with even light distribution and energy-efficient fixtures that could handle varying weather conditions.
Solutions
Sam Outdoor Living proposed a 10.7 by 3.9 metre flat Cooldek® patio constructed with Stratco materials. The design featured 75mm Cooldek® insulated roof panels, chosen for their strength, excellent thermal resistance, and sound absorption during rainfall. The supporting framework included 150 by 150mm aluminium posts, which provided structural reliability and corrosion resistance, and 140 by 50mm Probeam rafters designed for consistent load bearing. A 200mm edge gutter system was installed to deliver efficient water drainage and a clean perimeter finish.

Lighting was carefully planned to enhance both function and aesthetics. The design integrated 300mm Cooldek® Cool Light™ panels that allow diffused natural light to enter the space during the day. At night, eight LED downlights offer balanced, low-glare illumination across key seating areas, while four focused spotlights highlight specific outdoor features. The wiring and electrical fittings were neatly concealed within the roof cavity, maintaining a professional and streamlined appearance. All lighting fixtures were outdoor-rated and energy-efficient, reducing power consumption and maintenance costs.
Results
Once completed, the patio provided the homeowners with a year-round living and entertainment area. The insulated roof system now maintains stable temperatures across the seasons, creating a comfortable microclimate underneath. The Cool Light™ panels soften daylight and minimize glare, while the evening lighting setup produces a clear, even glow that enhances the outdoor atmosphere without excessive brightness.
With its durable Stratco components, the structure offers long-term weather resistance and minimal upkeep requirements. The finished result combines precise construction with visual appeal, and the homeowners now use the space daily for both family gatherings and quiet evenings. The project successfully met the technical and aesthetic targets set out at the beginning, creating a practical yet refined outdoor environment that integrates seamlessly with the home.
