Year-round Outdoor Living Space With Integrated Lighting

Challenge

In March 2025, Sam Outdoor Living was approached by a homeowner in Truganina, VIC 3029, to transform a 37-square-metre backyard into a stylish and functional outdoor space. The client envisioned an area suitable for year-round use, with a focus on comfort, durability, and modern design. They required a solution that could withstand varying weather conditions, provide thermal comfort, and incorporate lighting for evening use—all while maintaining a low-maintenance profile.

Solution

To meet these requirements, Sam Outdoor Living proposed and installed a custom 8.7 x 4.2 metre flat-roofed patio using Stratco’s Cooldek® insulated panels. The structure was supported by Probeam 140x50mm beams and 150x150mm aluminium posts, paired with a 200mm edge gutter for efficient water drainage. The Cooldek® panels, with a 50mm insulation core, offered excellent thermal performance, helping to regulate temperatures throughout the year.

A key feature of the design was the integrated lighting system, which significantly enhanced the space’s usability and ambiance. Eight recessed downlights were installed within the ceiling panels, providing uniform illumination for general activities such as dining and socializing. To further enrich the atmosphere and highlight focal points around the patio, three adjustable spotlights were strategically positioned. This combination of lighting types allowed for both functional and decorative lighting effects, supporting the client’s desire for an inviting and practical outdoor setting.

Result

Since installation, the outdoor space has become a central part of the client’s home, offering comfort, versatility, and visual appeal. The lighting design has enabled consistent use of the area well into the evening, creating a warm and welcoming environment for gatherings. The Cooldek® roof panels, paired with high-performance materials from Stratco, have provided excellent durability and thermal control, requiring minimal upkeep. Overall, the project successfully met the client’s goals, delivering a year-round outdoor living solution that enhances both lifestyle and property value.
