Year-round Patio Upgrade In Mickleham

Challenge

In July 2025, a client in Mickleham, VIC contacted Sam Outdoor Living with a request to upgrade their backyard. They wanted a covered outdoor space that could be used throughout the year, whether for hosting guests or relaxing on their own. The area needed to be functional and visually consistent with their home, while also handling Melbourne’s varying weather conditions. The total project area measured 27 square metres, and the client was clear that they wanted a high-quality build that wouldn’t require frequent maintenance.

Solution

Sam Outdoor Living designed and installed a flat-roof patio measuring 8 metres by 3.3 metres. To ensure insulation and weather resistance, the roof structure used 50mm Cooldek panels. Structural framing was completed using 140x50mm Probeam, and the support system featured 150x150mm aluminium posts that offered strength without compromising aesthetics. The team installed 200mm edge gutters to handle water runoff cleanly and prevent pooling during heavy rain.

To make the space comfortable year-round, eight downlights were integrated into the ceiling layout. Two heater strips were mounted along the structure to provide warmth during winter evenings. Every component was selected for durability, ease of maintenance, and modern appearance, using materials sourced from trusted suppliers like Bondor and Stratco.

Results

The completed patio gave the homeowners a comfortable and reliable space that could be used in any season. The insulated panels kept the heat out during summer and retained warmth during colder months. The heater strips extended the usability of the space into late evenings, while the built-in lighting added a practical yet cozy atmosphere. The client now uses the area regularly to host friends and family and has reported that the build requires minimal upkeep. The patio not only added usable living space but also improved the property's overall value and street appeal.
