Creating A Year-round Entertaining Space In Hillside

Challenge

In April 2025, Sam Outdoor Living was approached by a homeowner in Hillside, VIC, who wanted to revamp their outdoor space into a practical yet stylish area for year-round enjoyment. The client envisioned a space that would be equally suited for entertaining guests and relaxing with family—something that could stand up to the elements while offering a refined, cohesive look. The area to be transformed spanned 48 square meters and required a structure that could provide protection from the sun and rain while seamlessly blending with the home’s existing exterior.

Solution

After an on-site consultation and design review, Sam Outdoor Living recommended a custom-built Cooldek® patio system measuring 11.8 by 4.1 meters. This flat-roof design featured Stratco’s Cooldek® insulated panels at a thickness of 50mm, providing effective thermal insulation to keep the space cool in summer and warm in cooler months. The system was supported by robust 150x150mm aluminium posts, ensuring long-term structural integrity while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.

To enhance the overall functionality, we incorporated several additional features: 140x50mm Probeam roof framing for extra strength, a 200mm edge gutter system for efficient water drainage, eight integrated downlights for ambient evening lighting, and two smart ceiling fans to improve airflow and climate control. Every component was selected not only for its durability but also for its ease of maintenance, using materials designed to withstand Victoria’s variable weather conditions without sacrificing visual appeal.

Result

Since completion, the client has been thrilled with the transformation. The new patio has turned their backyard into a versatile, all-season space that is both beautiful and highly functional. Whether hosting gatherings or enjoying quiet evenings, the area offers year-round comfort thanks to the insulation, lighting, and ventilation enhancements. The Cooldek® panels significantly reduce heat transfer, making it an energy-efficient addition, while the quality Stratco materials ensure the structure remains low-maintenance and long-lasting. The final result is a stunning extension of their living area that adds not only daily enjoyment but also lasting value to their home.
