Modern Stratco Flat Roof Patio Installation In Doreen

Challenge

In April 2025, Sam Outdoor Living was contracted by a homeowner in Doreen, VIC, 3754 to enhance a 22m² backyard area into a high-performance, weather-resistant outdoor living space. The client’s primary objective was to create a permanent structure that could function as an outdoor entertainment zone and relaxation area, with minimal maintenance and maximum year-round usability. The site posed several considerations, including exposure to harsh sun, rain, and wind, requiring a robust roofing system with strong thermal and structural performance. The client also prioritized clean architectural lines and an integrated electrical setup for lighting and ventilation.

Solution

To deliver a solution that addressed both aesthetic and functional goals, Sam Outdoor Living designed and installed a custom 8.5m x 2.6m flat-roof patio structure using Stratco’s Cooldek® insulated roofing panels. The Cooldek® system was specified with a 50mm thick insulated core, providing effective thermal insulation and sound dampening while presenting a smooth ceiling-like finish on the underside. This helped regulate ambient temperature below the patio, making the space suitable for both summer and winter use.

The structural frame was engineered using 140x50mm Probeam steel beams—selected for their high load-bearing capacity and clean-span capability, reducing the need for intermediate supports. These beams were anchored to 150x150mm powder-coated aluminium posts, chosen for their corrosion resistance and visual uniformity with the rest of the build. A 200mm edge gutter was installed to manage stormwater runoff efficiently, with discreet downpipe placement to maintain the minimalist design.

To enhance functionality, the patio was fitted with 8 integrated LED downlights and 2 smart-controlled ceiling fans. Electrical conduit and wiring were concealed within the Probeam framework, maintaining a seamless finish while allowing for easy access and serviceability. All fixtures were rated for outdoor use and wired to a central smart controller for user-friendly operation. The entire build was completed with materials supplied by Stratco, ensuring consistency in quality and long-term product warranty coverage.

Result

The completed installation successfully transformed the client's outdoor area into a modern, all-season extension of their home. The Cooldek® insulated roof significantly reduced heat transfer from the overhead sun, creating a cooler, more comfortable environment in summer and retaining warmth in cooler months. The structural integrity of the Probeam framework, combined with the corrosion-resistant aluminium posts, ensures the patio will remain stable and low-maintenance for years to come.

With the addition of energy-efficient lighting and smart ceiling fans, the outdoor area is now fully equipped for evening gatherings and climate-controlled comfort. The concealed electrical work contributes to the clean architectural aesthetic the client desired, while also adding long-term value to the property. Overall, the project met the performance, durability, and design standards expected, and has become a key feature of the homeowner’s outdoor lifestyle.
