Custom Insulated Cooldek Patio With Lighting & Fan

Challenge

In May 2025, Sam Outdoor Living was engaged by a homeowner in Brookfield, VIC 3338, to transform an underused backyard into a comfortable and functional space that could be enjoyed year-round. The client envisioned an outdoor area that was not only visually appealing but also built to last, suitable for both relaxing with family and entertaining guests. With a total coverage area of 36 square metres, the project required careful planning to balance structural durability, visual cohesion, and usability in all weather conditions.

Solutions

To meet these requirements, Sam Outdoor Living designed and installed a 5.3m by 6.7m flat-roof patio using Stratco’s Cooldek® insulated roofing system. The 75mm thick Cooldek panels were selected for their excellent thermal insulation properties, reducing heat transfer from the roof and creating a more comfortable environment underneath—especially during warmer months. The flat profile allowed for a clean, modern finish that integrated seamlessly with the existing home structure.

Structurally, the patio was supported by a combination of 150x150mm aluminum posts for the front elevation and 90x90mm steel posts at the rear. These were mounted using 50x50mm rise brackets, ensuring a stable, elevated alignment that met both aesthetic and engineering standards. The roof was framed with 140x50mm Probeam beams, known for their load-bearing performance and compatibility with long-span applications like this one.

To enhance functionality and comfort, Sam Outdoor Living installed four downlights evenly spaced across the roof panels, providing ample lighting for evening use without disrupting the clean ceiling lines. A smart ceiling fan was also mounted centrally, offering additional airflow control on still days and contributing to the usability of the space during summer.

Results

Since completion, the client has reported frequent use of the area for both quiet outdoor meals and larger gatherings. They’ve expressed particular appreciation for the clean look and year-round comfort provided by the insulated roof and integrated lighting and fan system. The low-maintenance materials used throughout the build (particularly the Stratco components) have also added long-term peace of mind. The new patio has not only extended their living space but also significantly enhanced the property’s overall appeal and value.
