Cooldek® Patio And Composite Decking Upgrade

Challenge

The homeowners in Point Cook approached Sam Outdoor Living with a clear goal: they wanted to turn their underused backyard into a functional, stylish space they could enjoy year-round. The existing area lacked shade, structure, and visual appeal, making it impractical for both entertaining and everyday use.

They wanted something that would feel like an extension of their home: a seamless indoor-outdoor flow that was modern, low-maintenance, and built to last. But they also needed it to withstand the unpredictable Melbourne weather, with both hot sun and heavy rain taken into account. Comfort, durability, and long-term value were all top priorities.

Solution

We proposed a tailored solution combining two key elements: a fully insulated Stratco Cooldek® patio and a large, low-maintenance composite deck. The Cooldek® patio measured 5.9m x 4.2m and was built with 50mm insulated panels to reduce heat in summer and trap warmth in winter. The flat roof design offered a clean, architectural finish, supported by 150x150mm aluminium posts and 140x50mm Probeam framing for strength and stability. A 200mm edge gutter ensured efficient rainwater drainage.

To bring natural light into the space while keeping it protected, we incorporated Palram Ez-glaze panels. We also integrated six downlights and a smart ceiling fan, allowing for day-to-night comfort and control with minimal energy use.

Attached to the patio, we built a 10.8m x 4.0m composite deck. This decking material was selected for its resistance to fading, moisture, and warping—perfect for a low-maintenance lifestyle without compromising on appearance. The deck was carefully installed to create a level transition from the indoor area, providing both aesthetic cohesion and practical flow.

Result

The completed build transformed the backyard into a functional, visually striking outdoor area. The insulated patio roof now provides shade and comfort across all seasons, while the composite decking offers a durable and easy-to-clean surface ideal for hosting, lounging, or dining outside.

The integrated lighting and smart fan enhance the atmosphere and make the space usable at any time of day. The combination of Stratco and Palram products ensures longevity and weather resistance, so the homeowners can spend more time enjoying their space, and less time maintaining it.

Most importantly, the family now has a backyard that feels like a true part of their home. What was once an overlooked patch of grass is now a favourite gathering spot that adds comfort, beauty, and long-term value to the property.
