Dual Patio Design For Comfort And Performance

Challenge

In August 2025, Sam Outdoor Living was commissioned to design and construct a high-performance outdoor area in Truganina, VIC, 3029. The homeowner wanted a versatile space suitable for entertaining and relaxation in all weather conditions. The total project area measured 37 square meters and required a design that balanced aesthetic appeal with practical functionality and low maintenance.

Solutions

Following an in-depth site assessment, the team developed a dual-patio configuration that combined two complementary systems: a 5.1x3.8-meter flat Cooldek® patio and a 4.6x3.8-meter flat Colorbond® patio. This approach allowed for differentiated zones within the same outdoor environment, optimizing both shade coverage and airflow.

The Cooldek® patio formed the main covered entertaining area. Constructed with 50mm Cooldek® insulated panels, it provided superior thermal efficiency, reducing heat transfer during warmer months while maintaining a comfortable environment year-round. Structural integrity was ensured through 150x150mm aluminum posts and 140x50mm Probeam rafters, supported by a 200mm edge gutter for effective drainage. Integrated electrical fittings included four downlights and a centrally mounted smart ceiling fan to enhance air circulation and ambient lighting. Motorised PVC Ziptrak blinds enclosed the area, allowing the space to be sealed against wind or opened for natural ventilation when desired.

Adjacent to this structure, the Colorbond® patio extended the functional footprint with a 4.6x3.8-meter section. This portion was built using Trimdek sheets to maintain a sleek, modern finish consistent with the rest of the property. The framework utilized 150x150mm aluminum posts, 100x50mm aluminum beams, and 140x50mm Probeam supports to deliver long-lasting stability. Two batten lights were installed to ensure sufficient illumination after sunset, maintaining usability at all hours.

The combination of insulated and non-insulated roofing provided the client with flexibility across different seasons and usage scenarios. Each component, from Stratco’s premium-grade materials to Ziptrak’s automated blind system, was selected for longevity and ease of maintenance.

Results

Since completion, the homeowners have described the new structure as a transformative addition to their property. The seamless integration of the Cooldek® and Colorbond® systems created a cohesive space that blends style with practicality. The area now functions as an all-weather retreat that enhances both comfort and property value, offering year-round usability without compromising on design integrity.
