A Technical Approach To Year-round Comfort

Challenge

In August 2025, Sam Outdoor Living was approached by a homeowner in Mernda, VIC, 3752 who wanted to reconfigure a modest 15-square-meter outdoor area into a reliable and visually refined living zone. The client wanted a structure that would function through every season while enhancing the character of the property. The existing space required a design that maintained efficiency, provided weather protection, and introduced controlled lighting without overcrowding the area.

Solutions

After evaluating the layout, surrounding structures, and drainage requirements, the team recommended a 4.3 by 3.4-meter flat Colorbond® patio. The design relied on a calibrated selection of materials from Lysaght and Stratco to guarantee consistent performance. Flatdek roofing panels measuring 310mm were installed to deliver strong spanning capability and a clean, uniform ceiling finish. Wonder Glass panels of the same dimension were incorporated to introduce natural light while maintaining coverage, ensuring the patio remained bright during daytime use.

The structure was supported by 150x150mm aluminum posts chosen for their resistance to corrosion and their ability to maintain rigidity under load. Probeam rafters sized at 140x50mm formed the primary support system, allowing the roof sheets to remain stable during temperature fluctuations and heavy rainfall. A 200mm edge gutter was fitted along the perimeter to manage water displacement efficiently and minimize runoff near the building envelope.

To extend usability beyond daylight hours, the installation included a coordinated lighting system. Four downlights provided soft ambient lighting ideal for evening gatherings, while two focused spotlights were positioned to highlight specific areas and increase functional visibility. The electrical components were integrated within the structural framing to preserve a clean visual profile.

Results

Since completion, the homeowners have described the new patio as a significant improvement to their outdoor lifestyle. The combination of Colorbond® materials, precision fabrication, and integrated lighting has produced a sheltered area that remains comfortable across variable weather conditions. The structure requires minimal upkeep and has quickly become a preferred setting for relaxation and hosting guests, adding both aesthetic and practical value to the property.
