Colorbond Trimdek Patio With Fibreglass Skylight In Epping

Challenge

In September 2025, Sam Outdoor Living was engaged to upgrade a large outdoor area in Epping, VIC 3076, with a total footprint of approximately 70 square metres. The homeowner wanted a permanent structure that could support year-round use while maintaining a clean, modern appearance. The key challenge was balancing full weather protection with natural daylight, as the space needed to remain bright and open rather than enclosed or overly shaded. Durability and low maintenance were also critical, given the size of the structure and its frequent use for entertaining and everyday living.

Solution

To meet these requirements, Sam Outdoor Living designed a custom flat-roof patio split into two connected sections, measuring 5.53 by 7 metres and 5.64 by 5.5 metres. The roofing system was built using Colorbond® Trimdek sheeting, selected for its high tensile strength, wide rib profile, and ability to span efficiently across larger areas. Trimdek’s corrosion-resistant steel finish provides long-term performance in varying weather conditions while maintaining a sharp, architectural look.

The structure was supported by 90x90mm aluminium posts paired with 140x50mm Probeam members, ensuring structural stability across the wide spans without excessive visual bulk. A 160mm edge gutter was integrated to manage rainwater effectively, preventing overflow while keeping the roofline clean and proportional to the overall build.

To address the need for natural light, 780mm fibreglass skylights were incorporated into the roof layout. These skylights allow diffused daylight to enter the space without excessive heat or glare, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting during the day while preserving full overhead weather protection. The placement was carefully planned to distribute light evenly across the patio, avoiding harsh contrasts or shadowed areas.

Result

The completed patio has transformed the outdoor area into a highly functional extension of the home. The Colorbond Trimdek roofing provides strong protection from sun, rain, and wind, while its low-maintenance finish ensures the structure will retain its appearance over time with minimal upkeep. The integrated fibreglass skylights have proven to be a standout feature, keeping the space bright and inviting throughout the day without compromising comfort.

Since completion, the homeowners have been able to use the space consistently across all seasons, whether for large gatherings or everyday relaxation.
