Colorbond Performance Built For Outdoor Living In Craigieburn

Feature Image

Challenge

In September 2025, Sam Outdoor Living was engaged to upgrade a 24 square metre outdoor area at a residential property in Craigieburn, VIC 3064. The client wanted a covered structure that could handle Melbourne’s variable climate while maintaining a clean, contemporary profile that complemented the existing dwelling. The space needed to support regular entertaining, casual family use, and protection from direct sun and rain throughout the year.

The site presented several technical constraints. The patio footprint measured 7.8 metres in length and 3.1 metres in projection, requiring careful structural planning to manage span, load distribution, and compliance with local building requirements. Drainage had to be integrated without compromising head height or visual proportion. The client also requested natural light penetration without excessive heat gain, as the area connects directly to the main living zone. Electrical integration was required for evening usability, with lighting positioned to avoid glare and shadowing across the full span. The objective was to deliver a structure that achieved long-term durability, precise water management, and balanced daylight control while preserving a streamlined architectural appearance.

Solution

Sam Outdoor Living designed and constructed a custom 7.8 x 3.1 metre flat roof patio system using Stratco components and Colorbond steel to ensure structural integrity and corrosion resistance. The structure was engineered around 90 x 90 millimetre aluminium posts to provide high strength-to-weight performance and long-term resistance to rust in an exposed outdoor environment. Primary load transfer was managed through a 140 x 50 millimetre Probeam, selected to accommodate the span and roof loading while maintaining a slim structural profile. The roofing system utilised Colorbond Trimdek sheeting, chosen for its ribbed profile which increases rigidity and improves water runoff efficiency. Trimdek’s high tensile steel composition and baked-on finish support low maintenance performance and resistance to fading.

To manage stormwater effectively, a 160 millimetre edge gutter system was installed along the roof perimeter. This capacity allows controlled collection and discharge of rainwater during peak rainfall events, reducing the risk of overflow and splashback near the dwelling. Natural lighting was introduced through a 780 millimetre fibreglass skylight panel integrated within the roof sheet layout. Placement was calculated to distribute daylight evenly across the 24 square metre area while limiting concentrated heat build-up. The skylight provides consistent daytime illumination, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

For night use, two batten lights were installed and wired to align with the structural grid of the patio. Their placement ensures uniform coverage across the seating and circulation zones without casting harsh shadows. All electrical work was coordinated to maintain clean cable management and compliance with safety standards. The overall configuration balances structural performance, drainage capacity, lighting integration, and architectural simplicity within the defined footprint.

Results

The completed patio now functions as a fully integrated outdoor extension of the home. The 24 square metre covered area supports dining, lounging, and small gatherings in both summer and winter conditions. The Trimdek roofing and Probeam framework provide solid overhead protection with minimal deflection under load, while the aluminium posts maintain long-term structural reliability with reduced maintenance demands. The 160 millimetre edge gutter system has delivered effective water control during rainfall, keeping the perimeter dry and protecting adjacent surfaces. The fibreglass skylight introduces consistent daylight, preventing the space from feeling enclosed while preserving shelter from weather exposure. At night, the installed batten lighting enables practical use without additional temporary fixtures.

The result is a technically sound outdoor structure that enhances property functionality and contributes measurable value to the home. The Craigieburn client now benefits from a purpose-built covered area engineered for durability, performance, and everyday comfort.
